All-Concrete Home Wins PACA “Project of the Year” Award |
| |
“Green” structure built using solid concrete walls, gains energy efficiency and other benefits.
Each year, the Pennsylvania Aggregates and Concrete Association (PACA) conducts a “Project of the Year” award competition to spotlight projects that creatively use concrete in both residential and commercial construction.
The 2009 winner of the residential project was a home built by Providence Homes & Neighborhoods, using Reward insulated concrete forms (ICFs). ICFs are hollow expanded polystyrene blocks – used to frame the house – which are then filled with ready mix concrete. This ICF construction process makes the house structure a very energy-efficient concrete envelope.
Located in Denver, PA, the home measured 4,458 square feet, and required 150 yards of concrete for its ICF walls and garage floor. Additional concrete was used for the patio, stamped sidewalk and colored concrete driveway, making concrete one of the most-used building materials on the site. E&G Concrete, based in Stevens, PA, performed all the ICF and concrete installation.
Following construction, an Energy Star® examiner audited the home’s energy efficiency and noted a low number of air exchanges per hour (.035). A rate of .09 is considered excellent, and typical stick-built homes rate between 1.0 - 2.0 exchanges per hour. The subsequent HERS (Home Energy Rating Score) Index for this home is 67— meaning this residence is 33 percent more efficient than the Energy Star baseline for home construction.
The ICFs for this home were supplied by our Construction Supply Centers™
division.

Urban Outfitters Facility Expansion Goes Successfully |
| |
Large investments in planning and teamwork-building paid off for New Holland Concrete on a recent project in Gap, PA. An existing distribution facility for Urban Outfitters – a clothing, furniture & lifestyle products company – was due for expansion, and Ready Mix Concrete was needed. Lots of it.
The project entailed the addition of warehouse space that would require 2,260 total yards of concrete, with the first pour using 1,080 yards alone. When installing a job this size, one of the main concerns for a General Contractor is know the Ready Mix producer can produce quality product and have the production, staffing and fleet of trucks to be able to keep the concrete flowing and the job on track.
This concern was raised by the General Contractor; Burdg, Dunham, & Associates, based in Hamilton, MO. When they and their local concrete contractor – STW Construction – were researching a Ready Mix supplier for the project, they stated “New Holland Concrete” was always recommended as the supplier of choice by local tradesmen and contractors, because of New Holland’s high level of customer service and expertise.”
Another deciding factor in New Holland’s selection was their experience in using fiber in the concrete mix, as it was a necessary addition for this project. New Holland Sales Representative, Darryl Keiser, was able to understand their needs and clearly explain the benefits of fiber usage, and how it would be incorporated into this project. New Holland’s leadership in communicating the needs & addressing the issues-- and how they would be handled on this job-- gave the General Contractor assurance they made the right decision in selecting New Holland Concrete as the sole supplier.
For a job this size, planning is critical. New Holland assembled a team of staff members from Safety, Fleet, QC, and Sales to work together to iron-out any issues upfront, and called several pre-production meetings with the contractors to make sure everyone was on the same page and understood their responsibilities.
Scott Weldon from STW Associates stated, “New Holland Concrete employees were eager to make things go smoothly…even having someone on the road to direct traffic to keep things running smoothly.” Internally, New Holland lined up 19 trucks out of two separate plants to make the 108 deliveries, pouring on average 140 yards per hour. New Holland called-in trucks as needed to provide just-in-time service-- versus lining up trucks-- to keep the job running efficiently. The pours were coordinated to happen during the night from 10P to 6A, significantly reducing the impact to their regular daily customers.
After the project was completed, Weldon commented, “We are very happy with the finished job. New Holland Concrete flawlessly laid 140 yards per hour without a hitch…over and over until the project was done.”

New Holland Concrete Wins PACA "Project of the Year" Awards |
| |
Each year, the Pennsylvania Aggregates and Concrete Association (PACA) holds a “Project of the Year” award competition to spotlight projects that creatively use concrete in both residential and commercial construction.
The winner of both the residential and commercial categories was New Holland Concrete, using our ready mix concrete product in two distinct ways.
Highlighting the residential project was a house built using insulated concrete forms, known as ICFs. ICF’s are used to frame the house and are filled with ready mix concrete, effectively making the house structure a highly energy-efficient concrete envelope.
Highlighting the commercial project was a water storage tank for Caernarvon Twp. that was built using seven different types of concrete “mixes.” Concrete’s long-life, low-maintenance benefits were several factors in consideration for this project.
